W-Nikkor C 3.5cm f1.8. A rare Leica screw mount version. 7 elements in 5 groups. At the time of its release in 1956, this was the fastest 35mm wide-angle lens in the world. While the Nikon S mount version of this 35mm f1.8 was produced in fairly large numbers, the L mount version is rare, with production said to be around 1,500 units.
For anyone digging deep into fast 35mm lenses for Leica and non-Leitz systems, this is surely one lens that becomes impossible to ignore.
Incidentally, the Nikkor 35/1.8 for Nikon S mount cannot be used on Leica bodies, even with a Leica adapter, as the rear lens group interferes with the camera’s rangefinder roller. For this reason, demand is concentrated on this rare L mount version.
The filter diameter is 43mm, which differs from the Nikon S mount version. The correct hood is the plastic rectangular hood made exclusively for the L mount version. This is an ultra-rare accessory, even scarcer than the lens itself and very difficult to find, but we currently have one in stock at our shop 😃
The chrome-plated parts show some signs of use such as rubbing, but there is no black paint loss on the aperture ring, which is often seen on this model, nor are there any noticeable scratches or dents. Overall, it has a rather clean appearance.
Fully overhauled in June 2026. Thanks to the careful servicing, both the helicoid and aperture ring now have a very pleasant feel. It is free from the rattling often found on L mount Nikkors. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focus is also excellent.
The glass has two or three tiny fungus marks about the size of a pinhead near the edge of the front element, as well as some slight coating deterioration. None of these should have any practical effect on images. There is no haze, and the glass is clear with excellent clarity.
The results from our actual shooting test were excellent. Sample photos have been posted in our gallery. Wide open, it renders with a soft character while still drawing the subject with fine detail. This is a lens very highly regarded among our shop staff.
It comes with a period Kenko UV filter and front cap.
