Nikkor-S 50mm f1.4, late version, Nikon S mount, with a black barrel. Serial number in the 410,000 range.
Its optical design is rooted in the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 for the Contax, with 7 elements in 3 groups. This black-barrel model was made lighter than the previous 50mm f1.4, weighing just 143g on our scale. On this version, the red C of Nikkor-S.C on the lens name ring was omitted, leaving the simple white Nikkor-S lettering. Filter size is 43mm.
It is also a popular lens for use on Leica and mirrorless cameras via an adapter. Around wide open, it produces a soft, delicate rendering, while stopping down by about three stops brings a noticeably sharper image.
A classic old lens that can be enjoyed at a reasonable price.
Overall, the exterior is in quite nice condition. The black paint on the aperture ring has become thin, with the brass underneath beginning to show through slightly, giving it a natural, well-aged appearance. It should also pair nicely with a clean-condition camera body. There are hardly any mounting marks on the bayonet.
The aperture operates properly. There is slight balsam deterioration around the edges of the inner elements, but it should have virtually no effect on actual shooting.
