Elmarit 28mm f2.8, early version, the so-called 9-element model. Popular red scale with black infinity lock. Made in Canada. Leitz product code 11801. Serial number in the 2.06 million range. Manufactured in 1964. Non-retrofocus design with 6 groups and 9 elements.
With its waisted barrel design, striking red engravings, and the black-painted infinity lock that settles nicely into place, this lens is one of the most sought-after versions among all Elmarit 28mm lenses. It is well regarded for its rich tonal rendering and beautifully smooth bokeh.
Filters are E48, or Series VII filters can be used in combination with the 12501 hood. Please note that this lens cannot be mounted on the Leica M5 or CL.
While many early Elmarit 1st lenses tend to suffer from balsam separation or back-focus issues, this particular example shows none of those tendencies. It delivers very sharp images even at full aperture.
Previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by its previous owner and has now returned to us. Welcome back!
There are signs of use such as light scuffing, but no noticeable dents or impact marks. The black paint on the infinity lock has worn naturally, revealing the brass underneath with a pleasing character. The 12501M hood is also in quite nice condition. While there is some overall wear, it is an ideal piece for practical, worry-free use.
Fully overhauled in 2020. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid remain smooth in operation, and rangefinder coupling is spot on. The infinity lock engages with a satisfying feel. The glass is clear and free of issues.
The lens performed very well in actual shooting tests, with accurate focus. It is sharp even wide open, delivering the high resolution characteristic of the 9-element version. The distinctive crisp rendering of the first-generation Elmarit is fully intact.
Includes the 14102P front cap shared with lenses such as the Noctilux f1.2 and Super-Angulon 21mm f3.4, a period-correct original rear cap in beautiful condition, a 12501M hood, and a Series VII filter.
