Leica M2-R manufactured in 1969/70. The Leica M2-R can be considered the civilian version of the Leica M2S CAMERA STILL PICTURE KS15-4, which was produced for the U.S. Army in 1966. Based on the Leica M2, it incorporates the rapid loading mechanism of the M4.
The military M2S units ordered by the U.S. Army were later cancelled, and these cameras were subsequently released to the civilian market by Leitz New York under the name M2-R, sold exclusively within the United States. Production took place from 1969 to 1970, with serial numbers ranging from 1248201 to 1250200, totaling only around 2,000 units.
The M2-R represents the final iteration of the M2. In addition to the rapid loading system, details such as the self-timer base and bottom plate differ from the standard M2. Perhaps due to being produced during the era when the M4 had already been introduced, the overall parts and finish subtly carry the atmosphere of the M4.

There are somewhat numerous light scuffs on the bottom plate. There are also signs of use on the strap lugs and several scratches on the back door, but no other noticeable dents or major marks. Overall, it remains a fairly clean body with a beautiful chrome finish. The vulcanite covering is entirely original.
Overhauled in April 2026. The shutter, film advance, and all functions operate smoothly, and the finder is bright and crystal clear with strong rangefinder contrast.

It comes with the matching serial number box, the original U.S. import certificate, a period-correct black plastic rear body cap, and a 1968 leaflet.
Incidentally, the leaflet features an early chrome Leica M4 in the 1.17 million serial range, from the transitional period when M lenses were shifting from silver to black finishes. By the time the M2-R was supplied, most lenses were already black, yet a beautifully chrome-finished Dual Range Summicron was still offered for the M2-R.
