Leica M4 Black Paint, made in Germany. Bearing a serial number in the 1.24 million range, this example was shipped in August 1969. The Leitz product code is 10402.
The Leica M4 was developed as the successor to both the Leica M3 and M2, combining the roles of the two cameras while further refining their design.
With features such as the angled rewind crank that remains in use on modern film Leicas, bright-line frames for 35, 50, 90, and 135mm lenses, and a rapid-loading system requiring no removable take-up spool, the M4 represents a highly accomplished and functionally complete design.
It was widely supported by professional photographers, particularly photojournalists associated with Magnum Photos, the internationally renowned photographic cooperative.
This example features the striking black-paint finish. The M4 was also available in chrome and black chrome, but the black-paint version remains the most highly sought-after. With age and use, the finish develops a distinctive character known as patina, giving each camera its own unique expression and individuality.
Another appealing aspect of the black-paint M4 is that it pairs beautifully not only with black lenses, but also with chrome-finished lenses. It looks especially superb fitted with a silver-finished Steel Rim Summilux or an eight-element Summicron.
A Leica M4 BP with a very appealing character. Natural brass exposure can be seen on the film advance lever, rewind crank, frame selector lever, self-timer lever, and accessory shoe. The black chrome finish on the rewind crank has worn considerably, revealing the aluminium underneath.
There are two very minor dents on the top cover: one above the serial number and another slightly in front of the shutter speed dial, near the small viewfinder window.
Fully overhauled by a specialist in June 2026. All controls operate smoothly. The viewfinder is clear and bright, with strong contrast in the rangefinder patch.
