Summilux 35mm f1.4 2nd generation, earliest version with focus tab stopper, commonly referred to as stopper version. Leitz catalog No. 11870. Serial number in the 2.22 million range. Made in Canada in 1969.
This example features the stopper in a silver base with black paint finish. It belongs to the later variation of the early stopper-equipped Summilux 35mm 2nd, with a black-painted stopper. For reference, the very earliest version has a painted stopper over a brass base.
A fast wide-angle lens representing Leitz, the spherical Summilux 35mm delivers a beautifully soft and gently glowing rendering at full aperture, while stopping down brings crisp sharpness, allowing you to fully enjoy the classic Summilux character. Among these, the stopper version is particularly sought after. It pairs exceptionally well with cameras such as the M4 paint models. Perhaps due to rising demand, examples have become noticeably scarce in recent years.
There is some paint loss on the stopper, but about 80% remains. The front edge of the barrel, aperture tab, and focusing tab still retain a deep black finish, preserving much of the original, almost-new appearance. A perfect match not only for a clean Leica M4 black paint body, but also for digital Leica M cameras.
Fully overhauled in April 2026. The aperture and focusing helicoid operate with a smooth, refined feel. The infinity stopper engages effortlessly. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
The only point to note is a faint 2–3mm fungus mark near the center of the front element. It has been thoroughly cleaned during the overhaul and will not progress. Otherwise, the glass is free from cleaning marks or haze, remaining crystal clear.
Test shots turned out excellent. Sample images are available in our photo gallery, all taken near wide open. We hope you will take a look.
The original matching box, 12504 hood, Series 7 UVa filter, and front and rear caps are included. The 12504 hood is a rare CANADA-marked version, seldom seen. A great addition for collectors as well.
