Noctilux 50mm f1.0, the popular E58 version. The Leitz product code is 11821. This example bears a serial number in the 2.85 million range, manufactured in 1977. The glass was developed in Germany, while the design and production were carried out by Leitz Canada.
A modified Gauss-type design with 6 elements in 7 groups. Featuring newly developed glass and an air-spaced element, it achieves the remarkable brightness of f1.0. Even in low-light environments, it delivers outstanding image rendering, making it one of Leitz’s most celebrated masterpieces.
Compared to the earlier f1.2 Noctilux with its aspherical element, this version is characterized by a softer, more delicate rendering at full aperture. The extremely shallow depth of field at f1.0 is astonishing, and while some vignetting can be observed wide open, the creative possibilities it offers are truly unique.
In recent years, its popularity has surged, driving prices higher, but considering its performance, the demand is well justified.
There are scuff marks on the front edge of the barrel from attaching and removing the hood, and some paint loss on the edges of the aperture ring. Aside from these, it remains in quite good condition.
Fully overhauled in March 2026. The aperture and helicoid have been adjusted to a smooth operation with a moderate, pleasant torque. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
When shooting wide open at close distances, a faint veil appears around the plane of focus. The rendering changes dramatically depending on the shooting distance, which is part of the unique charm of this lens.
There is slight coating wear on the front and middle elements, and traces of fungus along the edge of the rear element that could not be completely removed during cleaning. Otherwise, there are no noticeable cleaning marks or haze. Test shots turned out very well, and you can fully enjoy the rich, distinctive rendering typical of the E58 Noctilux.
Comes with the matching original box, 12519 hood, and rear cap.
