The Tessar 50mm f2.8, the standard entry-level lens for Contarex. This example has a black barrel finish. It was introduced in 1960 and sold until 1969. Production totaled 5,978 units. Manufactured by Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. This example has a 4.16 million serial number and was made in 1965.
A Tessar-type lens with a 3-group, 4-element construction. The minimum focusing distance is 35cm. At an actual measured weight of 205g, it is a lightweight lens.
There are minor marks on the aluminum helicoid ring, but otherwise there are no signs of use, and the lens is clean overall.
Fully overhauled in May 2026. The aperture and helicoid now operate very smoothly. The beautifully damped, exquisite torque of the helicoid is especially pleasing, making you want to turn it again and again just to enjoy the feel.
There is a small sesame seed-sized stain of about 2mm at the edge of the front element, but no haze is visible. It should have virtually no effect on actual images.
Comes with the original 50–135mm hood, UV filter, front and rear caps. The hood shows signs of use. There is one small dent on the base of the hood, but it does not affect attachment or removal.
A fine lens for practical use!
