Elmar 50mm f3.5. This is the so-called Red Elmar, with the depth-of-field scale engraved in red lettering. The Leitz product code is ELMAR. Serial number in the 1,320,000 range, manufactured in 1955. 4 elements in 3 groups. The glass has blue, purple, and amber coatings. The filter size is A36. The helicoid distance scale is in feet.
This is the final version of the A36 Elmar 50mm f3.5, a lens produced for more than 30 years since the days of the Leica Model A.
As expected from the ultimate evolution of the A36 Elmar, its high level of completion shines through in the solid feel of the barrel and the fine quality of the matte bead-blasted chrome plating.
The correct genuine hood is the FISON. Our own FB-07 hood for Elmar, which allows aperture operation with the hood attached, also makes an excellent companion. A true essential Leica lens.
There are hardly any signs of wear, and the matte chrome finish gives it a beautiful appearance. The collapsible section also shows very few marks, with the chrome plating shining brightly. Overall, this is a very clean and beautiful example.
Fully overhauled in June 2026, including focus adjustment. Both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate smoothly and comfortably, with no stress. The play that was present when we first acquired it has also been resolved, and the rangefinder coupling is spot-on, with accurate focus. The matte anti-reflection lacquer inside the barrel has also been carefully repainted, so even tighter rendering can be expected.
There are a few extremely light cleaning marks on the front element, but there is no haze, and the glass has excellent clarity. The coating is also in good condition.
The results of our test shots were excellent. Sharp rendering can be enjoyed from wide open.
A period-correct original front cap is included.
