Leica M4-2 in black chrome. The Leitz product code is 10410. Manufactured by Leitz Canada.
The serial number is in the 1.46 million range, made in 1978. This example is an early production piece and carries the same red Leitz badge on the left front as later seen on the M4-P. On the top cover are two inscriptions that create a curious contrast: Leitz Wetzlar and MADE IN CANADA. This combination is a feature found on some early M4-2 bodies and is considered quite uncommon.
The M4-2 debuted in 1978 after the introduction of the M5 and CL. It could be described as the return of the M4. Production lasted only three years until 1980, when it was succeeded by the M4-P.
No further cameras based on the M5-style body appeared afterward, and the classic M4-derived design has continued through to today’s digital and film Leica M models. This suggests that many photographers ultimately preferred this traditional Leica form. In Porsche terms it might be compared to the frog-eyed 911, or the boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It is fascinating how conservative people become when it comes to a design that feels complete.
Functionally, the M4-2 is based on the Leica M4 but without the self-timer. The bright frame set remains the same as the M4, providing 35, 50, 90, and 135mm frames. The accessory shoe became a hot shoe with an X-sync contact, and the body was designed to accept a motor winder.
Production numbers were relatively small, and the model is often overshadowed by the enduring popularity of other Leica M cameras. In recent years, however, interest has been quietly rising, with some collectors even seeking it as a birth-year Leica.
A rare and unusual piece.
Truly a like-new example with no visible signs of use. A rare specimen that has preserved its original 1978 new-condition appearance. With its complete accessories, this M4-2 is also well suited for a collection.
Under the previous owner, the camera was overhauled by a professional technician in December 2025. All functions operate properly, and the finder remains bright and clear.
Included are the original box with matching serial number, the 1978 edition instruction manual, the original Leica strap, and a body cap.
Most M4-2 cameras were heavily used, making such a condition very difficult to find.
