Summicron 35mm f2 with chrome barrel, commonly known as the 8-element. Leitz product code SAWOM, later 11308. This example was made in Canada. Serial number in the 2,060,000 range, manufactured in 1964.
Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m. E39 filter thread. The coating shows amber and purple hues. Actual measured weight of the lens body is 180g.
Born during the golden age of Leitz, the 8-element is admired not only for its superb rendering, but also for its beautifully functional design, full of the charm of fine German industrial craftsmanship. Wide open, it renders with a gentle softness. Stopped down slightly, the sense of dimensionality increases noticeably, and when further stopped down, it becomes sharp while retaining its smooth character. A truly Leica style, and truly Leica rendering. An immortal masterpiece that continues to enjoy the highest reputation. The standard.
Original hoods ITDOO and IROOA are compatible. Later hoods such as 12585 and 12504 can also be used.
There are some small scratches around the left side of the 0.7m minimum focusing distance mark on the helicoid, as well as on the stopper base. The barrel also shows some light rubbing, but these are very minor and not noticeable from a distance. Overall, this is a rather clean example for an 8-element Summicron.
Fully overhauled in June 2026. Thanks to meticulous servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate with a smooth, nicely damped feel. Even the way the infinity stopper settles into place has been finely adjusted. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on. The matte lacquer used to prevent internal reflections has also been carefully reapplied, so an even tighter rendering can be expected.
The middle elements show some very light cleaning marks that are only just visible under strong LED light, but they should have virtually no effect on image quality. The results of our actual shooting test were also excellent.
