Sonnar 50mm f1.5 in Leica L mount. Rangefinder-coupled, with a straight helicoid. Although it bears the Carl Zeiss Jena engraving, according to Carl Zeiss Jena Nummernbuch, Volume 2, the corresponding serial number is listed with different specifications. This is one of those mysterious Leica screw mount Sonnars that occasionally turn up.
3 groups, 7 elements. Marked with the T coating engraving. Meter scale. Minimum focusing distance is approximately 1m. Filter size is 40.5mm. The compact aluminum barrel weighs only 185g by actual measurement, making it very lightweight.

There are scuffs and small scratches from normal use, and the lens shows signs of use overall. There are minor dents on the front edge of the barrel and the edge of the aperture ring.
Fully overhauled in May 2026. The feel of both the aperture ring and helicoid has greatly improved. A very slight roughness remains in the helicoid, but there is no noticeable unevenness in torque, and for this type of lens, the operation is very smooth.
Most Sonnars of this kind have rather poor rangefinder coupling, but this example is unusually good in that regard. At or near full aperture, aberrations are strong and the image can sometimes be overly soft. In our shooting test, we felt that stopping down by about one or two stops gave a nicely balanced result.
There are somewhat many very light cleaning marks on the front element, and coating deterioration can be seen on several lens surfaces. Sample images have been posted in our gallery. They were taken from full aperture to around f2. We hope you will take a look.
Under harsh lighting conditions such as backlight, overexposure, or when a light source enters the lens directly, the image could sometimes take on a soft, whitish glow. It is a lens that makes you want to find the right balance and enjoy creating images with real character.
