This is the earliest rectangular-type FISON hood for the Leica Model A.

It is a hood from the era of the Leitz Anastigmat, Elmax, and early Elmar 50mm f3.5 lenses. Made in the 1920s. 36mm slip-on type. It is made in one piece, with no Leitz logo or markings.

This example has a step at the base of the hood, whereas the very earliest version was straight. The vertical index line is engraved on the upper section of the hood, whereas on the earliest version it was on the lower section. For these reasons, this is thought to be one of the later examples among the rectangular-type models. Actual measured weight is approximately 15.3g.

When mounted on an Elmar, the hood rotates together with the lens, so each time you use it you need to adjust it so that the vertical index line sits at the top. Quite an inconvenient hood, to say the least. Haha.

For that reason, it was soon replaced by the next circular version. Still, this piece is a historically charming oddity, a wonderfully peculiar hood that lets you feel the trial and error of Leica’s earliest days.

There is some paint loss on the side of the hood, but there are no dents or impact marks, and it remains in very good condition. The original paint from the period is still well preserved, making this a remarkably clean example for a rectangular FISON. It is hard to believe that nearly 100 years have passed since it was made.

We have confirmed fitment on our Leica Model A. If attachment or removal feels too loose or too tight, it can be adjusted using the tabs, but please take great care not to bend them too far.

The fact that this hood has survived on its own is already something to be grateful for. A 100-year-old hood. Rare item.
