Summilux 35mm f1.4, 2nd generation, without infinity lock. Leica product code 11870. Made by Leitz Canada. Serial number in the 3.08 million range, manufactured in 1980.
One of Leitz’s most iconic fast wide-angle lenses, this long-selling model remained in production for more than 30 years following the original Steel Rim version. It features a 7 elements in 5 groups optical design, with a minimum focusing distance of approximately 90cm. The matching lens hood is the two-piece 12504, which accommodates a Series 7 filter between the two sections.
A true Leica 35mm classic and an excellent all-round lens. Near wide open, it produces a soft and gentle rendering, while stopping down slightly brings a noticeable increase in depth and dimensionality. Stopped down further, it delivers sharp, beautifully defined lines while retaining a calm and natural atmosphere.
Compared with the Summicron, its rendering is finer and more delicate. Combining the distinctive character of a classic lens with excellent everyday usability, it is also a superb match for modern digital Leica M cameras. A highly accomplished lens with enduring appeal.
There is some minor black chrome wear around the front edge of the barrel, the helicoid ring, and the edges around the base, but no noticeable scratches or scuffs. Overall, the exterior is quite clean.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in September 2026. Careful servicing has left both the aperture ring and helicoid with a smooth and pleasant feel. The rangefinder coupling has also been thoroughly adjusted, and focus is spot-on even wide open. Please note that a slight sound can be heard from around the aperture ring when the lens is shaken. This is occasionally seen on this model due to individual variation and is not a fault.
The glass shows only extremely slight coating deterioration, visible only under a powerful LED light, and it should have virtually no effect on actual photography. Test shots also showed very good results.
Original Leica front and rear caps are included.
