An early Summilux 50mm f1.4 with a beautiful chrome finish. Commonly known in Japan as the Lady, this is the 1st version. The Leitz product code is SOOME, later changed to 11114. Serial number in the 1.68 million range, dating from 1959. The filter size is E43. Compatible hoods are the XOOIM, 12521G, and 12586. This example features amber- and purple-toned coatings.
The pre-redesign Summilux 50mm f1.4 1st is a highly sought-after model, prized for its rich, gentle rendering near wide open. Stopping down by just one stop brings a noticeably crisper image with impressive three-dimensionality. It is a remarkably versatile lens with a broad expressive range.
Its elegant and beautifully finished appearance has earned it the nickname the Lady. The timeless design pairs naturally not only with period M3 and M2 bodies, but also with current digital Leica cameras.
A true all-rounder.
There are two small scratches in the groove where the hood attaches. The plating around the front of the barrel also shows slight shininess, and the helicoid has some light rub marks. Overall, however, the exterior remains in reasonably good condition.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in July 2026. The play in the barrel that was present when the lens first arrived has been adjusted as far as possible. When shooting in portrait orientation, there is a small section where the helicoid feels slightly heavier, but this is not noticeable when shooting in landscape orientation. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focus is accurate.
The inner elements and their surrounding areas show extremely minor coating deterioration, visible only under a strong LED light, but this is unlikely to affect actual images. There are hardly any cleaning marks, and the original coatings remain intact on all surfaces.
The results of our shooting test were excellent. The refined, elegant rendering wide open, so characteristic of the Summilux 50mm f1.4 1st, can be fully appreciated. Sample images are available in our Photo Gallery.
A genuine rear cap and a third-party front cap are included.
