Summicron 35mm f2 with chrome barrel, commonly known as the 8-element version. Made in Canada. Serial number in the 2,220,000 range, manufactured in 1966. Leitz product code SAWOM, later 11308. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m. E39 filter size. Weight of the lens alone is 179g.
Introduced in 1958, this is the first version of the Summicron 35mm, featuring a symmetrical double-Gauss optical design with 8 elements in 6 groups. Its rendering at full aperture offers an exquisite balance of softness and detail. Stopping down slightly brings a noticeable increase in three-dimensionality. As the aperture is stopped down further, the lens delivers increasingly sharp images while retaining its gentle rendering character. An excellent lens that offers a wide range of photographic expression.
Beyond its outstanding optical performance, another major attraction is its beautifully functional design, characteristic of Leitz products from the company's golden era. It embodies the quintessential German aesthetic so deeply admired by Japanese enthusiasts. It looks equally impressive when mounted on a modern digital Leica. The popularity of the 8-element Summicron continues to grow, while well-preserved examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find with each passing year.
Compatible original Leitz lens hoods include the ITDOO and IROOA. Later hoods such as the 12585 and 12504 can also be fitted.
The lens shows very little sign of use and is in excellent cosmetic condition. There are no noticeable scratches or haze. Its condition fully reflects the fine craftsmanship of Leitz during its golden era after World War II.
Fully overhauled in 2026. Both the aperture ring and focusing helicoid operate very smoothly. The infinity lock engages effortlessly and smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is accurate, and focus is excellent.
The glass shows very slight coating deterioration on an internal element, visible only under strong LED light, along with two or three extremely faint cleaning marks. None of these should have any noticeable effect on actual photographs. The original coating remains intact across all lens surfaces. Overall, the glass is in very good condition.
The results of our test shots were also very good. Wide open, the lens delivers the elegant softness characteristic of the 8-element Summicron. Stopping down slightly brings a marked increase in contrast and three-dimensionality.
Original Leitz front and rear caps are included.
