Summar 5cm f2, rigid barrel version. Commonly known as the Hyottoko Summar. This is a rare early-production model of the Summar, made in limited numbers. Nickel finish. Serial number in the 160,000 range, manufactured in 1933. Leitz product code SUMAR. Distance scale in feet.
The Hyottoko Summar has long been prized for its distinctive appearance and rarity. It also pairs exceptionally well with black and nickel Barnack Leicas, making for a striking combination.
On the other hand, this model is also known as one of the more problematic lenses. Some examples suffer from looseness causing inconsistent rangefinder coupling, while others have been improperly polished overseas, resulting in poor focus accuracy and reduced resolution. It is definitely a lens that should ideally be tested before purchase.
This particular example has been fully overhauled. Both rangefinder coupling and image performance are very solid, making it a reliable piece you can use with confidence.
Due to use, the nickel plating on the edges of the barrel has worn thin in places, with a bit of the brass showing through, which adds to its character. There are no dents or noticeable impacts.
Fully overhauled in March 2026. The aperture and helicoid operate exceptionally smoothly, just as one would hope. The matte anti-reflective lacquer inside the barrel has also been carefully reapplied, contributing to more refined image rendering. Rangefinder coupling accuracy is spot on.
There is a very faint, hairline balsam separation on one of the middle elements, visible only under strong LED light. The front element also shows slight glass aging, but neither affects actual shooting. There is no fungus or haze, and for a Hyottoko Summar, the glass is in very clean condition.
Test shots turned out excellent. Sample images are available in our gallery, and we hope you will take a look. Thanks to the good optical condition, it delivers images with a solid core and pleasing color even wide open.
It comes with a genuine bakelite front cap and a genuine metal rear cap.
