Summarit 50mm f1.5, early version with Midland engraving. Leitz product code SOOIA. Serial number in the 1,240,000 range, manufactured in 1955, made in Canada. Distance scale in feet. Filter size E41.
Although identical in appearance and optical construction to the German-made Summarit, the name ring is engraved Ernst Leitz Canada Ltd. Midland.
Interestingly, next to the feet distance scale marking on the helicoid, the word Germany is engraved, which may seem contradictory to the Ernst Leitz Canada Ltd. Midland engraving on the name ring. However, among Summarit lenses in the 1246xxx serial range, examples bearing Midland on the name ring and Germany on the barrel are occasionally seen.
Shortly after this production period, the Summarit transitioned to the later version. With serial numbers only about 100 units higher than this example, the cleaner-looking late-type Summarit begins to appear in the sequence.
Another distinctive feature of Summarit Midland lenses in this serial range is the slightly smaller lettering on the name ring, with marginally wider spacing between the characters compared to standard Summarit versions. Once accustomed to it, the difference from the regular version is immediately recognizable.
An irresistible piece for devoted Midland enthusiasts. Incidentally, we previously handled examples with serial numbers ending in 608 and 610. This one ends in 609. Had they been together at the same time, it would have formed an exceptionally rare consecutive trio. So close.
It would be delightful to pair it with a Midland-engraved Leica IIIf or a Leica Leicavit SYOOM and take it out on the streets.
For those who seek something just a little different from the crowd.
There is one light scuff on the base of the barrel and some minor wear on the outer filter mounting ring at the front, but otherwise the barrel, including the mount, shows almost no signs of use and remains very clean. The Midland lettering on the nameplate is still clearly and crisply white.
Fully overhauled in 2025. Thanks to careful servicing, the helicoid operates smoothly and the aperture clicks feel precise and well balanced. Rangefinder coupling is accurate and focus is spot on.
As for the glass, there is one small mark at the edge of the front element and a few faint cleaning marks on the front and rear elements. Typical coating wear often seen on Summarit lenses is present, but there is no haze and the optics remain clear. Test shots produced very good results.
A genuine front cap is included.
Rare item.
