Summicron 35mm f2, second generation, 6-element version. Leica product code 11309. This example bears a serial number in the 2.71 million range and was manufactured in 1974. Tabless version. Made in Canada. Filter size E39.
Often overshadowed by the popular 8-element version, the 6-element Summicron nevertheless offers plenty of charm and capability. From its well-balanced helicoid rotation and focus knob that sits naturally under the fingertips, to its slightly subdued color rendition and rendering that remains crisp without becoming overly harsh, it is a lens full of character and performance.
Weighing approximately 180g, its light and compact size pairs beautifully with Leica M bodies.
Compatible lens hoods include the 12504 hood used for the Summilux 35mm, as well as the 12585 hood shared with the 50mm lenses.
Minor loss of black paint can be seen on the front edge of the filter rim, the aperture ring, and the edges of the knurling at the base, but there are no noticeable scratches, scuffs, or dents. The barrel remains very clean overall.
Fully overhauled in February 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid operate with a very pleasant, smooth feel. Rangefinder coupling is correct and focusing is accurate.
A slight age-related deterioration of the coating can be seen on the middle element, but it should have virtually no effect on image quality. There is no haze, and the glass is clear and bright.
Actual shooting tests produced excellent results. A lens that is right at its best for practical use.
