Summaron 35mm f3.5, late version with E39 mount. Leica screw mount. Serial number in the 1.55 million range, produced in 1958. The Leitz product code is SOONC, the same as the earlier A36 version. Double-Gauss type optical design with 6 elements in 4 groups. Distance scale in feet.
This E39 Summaron appeared in 1956 and was updated to accept E39 filters as well as accessories such as the ITDOO and IROOA lens hoods. Compared with the earlier A36 type it became somewhat larger, but it can be considered an improved model in terms of usability.
Summaron 35mm f3.5 is known for its strong central resolution, while the natural vignetting near full aperture creates a dramatic atmosphere. Despite its excellent rendering, production numbers were relatively high and prices remain reasonable, making it a very approachable and classic Leica wide-angle lens.
On the other hand, the Summaron is also known for often developing haze, and the condition of the glass can greatly influence its rendering. This particular example shows some coating deterioration, but no haze is present and the lens delivers very pleasing results.
Only very slight signs of handling can be seen, with no noticeable scratches. Overall, this is a very clean example of the Summaron.
Fully overhauled in February 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid operate with a smooth and pleasant feel. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly accurate.
Unusually for a Summaron, the original coatings remain well preserved on all glass surfaces. There is extremely slight coating wear that can only be seen under strong LED light, and it should have virtually no effect on actual photography.
We carried out a test shoot at our shop, including scenes with strong backlight in daylight. The lens produced the characteristic contrasty rendering typical of the Summaron.
A genuine front cap and a plastic case are included.
