Second-generation Summicron 35mm f2, the early 6-element version, commonly known as the small lever type. Leitz product code 11309. Serial number in the 2.33 million range, made in 1969. Although some small lever versions were produced in Canada, this example is made in Germany. Filter size is E39.
The 6-element Summicron is often overshadowed by the famous 8-element version, yet it is a lens full of real capability and charm. From the well-balanced helicoid rotation and the focusing knob that fits naturally under the fingertips, to its slightly restrained color rendition and rendering that is firm but never overly harsh, it offers a very satisfying photographic character.
On this small lever model, the lever and the tab on the distance ring interfere with each other, so the infinity index and aperture index are intentionally offset. This position is correct for this design.
Compatible lens hoods include the 12504 hood used with the Summilux 35mm, or the 12585 hood shared with 50mm lenses. Lightweight and compact, it pairs beautifully with Leica M cameras and remains one of Leica’s classic wide-angle lenses.
There are some signs of use, such as minor paint loss on the front edge of the barrel, the small lever on the aperture ring, and the corners of the base. One of the mount claws shows a trace of past correction, but it has been properly repaired and the lens mounts and dismounts normally. It would also pair nicely with a well-used Leica M4 from the same era, matching both the atmosphere and the period.
Fully overhauled in February 2026, including focus adjustment. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture ring operates with a smooth, damped feel without the common rattling play, and the helicoid is beautifully tuned with an excellent tactile feel. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly accurate.
A few extremely light cleaning marks can be seen on the front element, but they should have no effect on actual photography. There is no haze, and the glass is clear and bright.
Thoroughly serviced and ready to go, this is an excellent lens for those who want to enjoy shooting actively and without hesitation.
