The Leitz FODIS vertical rangefinder, an early version with the smaller-diameter distance dial. The distance scale is graduated in meters, with a minimum measuring distance of 1m. It bears a four-digit serial number and was manufactured in the 1920s.
The nickel-plated dial contrasts beautifully with the black-painted body, while the silver-inlaid hexagonal E. Leitz logo lends an air of distinction. With its exceptional sense of precision and luxury, this is a superb example of prewar Leitz craftsmanship. Its 83mm base length allows highly accurate distance measurement.
Measuring 105mm in overall height, its tall, tower-like profile above the camera body has a wonderfully old-fashioned appearance rarely seen today.

There are faint areas of exposed brass here and there, but no noticeable scratches, dents, or impact marks. Overall, the exterior remains in very attractive condition. The well-preserved inlaid hexagonal logo provides a crisp accent against the glossy piano-black finish, enhancing its wonderfully aged and distinguished appearance.
It was fully overhauled in July 2026, including replacement of the half mirror. Both the view and operation are excellent.
There is some deterioration around the eyepiece frame, but this does not affect visibility. The glass is clear, the view is bright and clean, and the rangefinder double image is sharply defined.
Even after a century, it remains fully usable and ready for regular service. More than a quarter of the 21st century has already passed, but this remarkable rangefinder still has plenty of life ahead of it.
