The Foca Universal RC, often referred to as U.R.C., is the final and top-of-the-line rangefinder model produced by OPL, Optique et Précision de Levallois of France, a company that had manufactured military optical equipment since before the war. This was the last and most advanced model in the Foca lineup. Shutter speeds range from T and B to 1–1/1000. Manufactured in 1962–63.
At first glance it resembles the familiar Barnack-style Leica-type cameras seen everywhere, yet it features distinctive mechanisms such as a lever wind and a bayonet mount. Its straight-lined body design feels refreshingly modern, and the black and chrome two-tone finish is particularly stylish.
Like a Contax, the entire back comes off for film loading, making the process straightforward. When loading film, remember to lift the film guide and pass the film beneath it.
In this URC model, the finder of the earlier Universal R was completely redesigned, now featuring a life-size viewfinder with a parallax-corrected bright frame for 50mm.
It comes with OPL’s fast and highly regarded lens, a beautifully preserved Oplarex 50mm f1.9.
A rare item.
Regrettably, there is one small dent beside the objective-side finder window. Apart from this, there is very little sign of use, and the bright, glossy plating typical of Foca remains dazzling, giving the camera a beautiful appearance.
The previous owner had it thoroughly serviced. The shutter and all other functions operate smoothly, the finder view is crisp and clear, and the rangefinder patch shows strong contrast. There is a slight vertical misalignment in the rangefinder image, but it should not affect focusing in practical use.
The highlight of this set is the beautiful condition of the included Oplarex 50mm f1.9. As the glass of this lens is relatively soft and the coating delicate, most examples show heavy cleaning marks on the front element. However, this one has no noticeable wiping marks and the glass is strikingly clear. Finding such a clean f1.9 is rare even in France. A truly hard-to-find condition.
A slightly loose original front cap and a clean leather case are included.
