W-Nikkor 28mm f3.5. A wide-angle lens for Nippon Kogaku’s Nikon S-series rangefinder cameras. Including the Leica L-mount version, it is said that around 10,000 examples were produced.
This example is the later version, with a lightweight aluminum barrel finished in black paint. It has an Orthometar-type optical design with 6 elements in 4 groups, and is coated with a pale-colored coating. Distance scale in feet. The actual measured weight is only 100g. A compact, lightweight, and very nice lens.
The recessed, funnel-shaped front design means it can be used comfortably without a hood. A dedicated round hood was also made for this lens, but it is quite rare today.
It looks stylish not only on a Nikon S, but also when mounted on a modern digital mirrorless camera. A lens to enjoy both for shooting and simply admiring.
It shows little sign of use and has a very beautiful exterior. The black paint remains well preserved.
All functions work properly. Rangefinder coupling and focusing accuracy have been checked with a Nikon S body and focusing glass.
There is one shallow cleaning mark near the edge of the front element, and a few very shallow cleaning marks on the rear element. There is also some coating deterioration around the edge of an internal element, and balsam separation at the edge, but these should have almost no effect on actual photography.
Original front and rear caps are included.
