A rare piece: the Nikon S3 Black Paint. This example is an early model with a cloth focal-plane shutter, clearly different from the later Nikon S3 reissue, commonly known as the Olympic version.
The original S3 Black Paint cameras carry serial numbers in the 631xxxx range, while the Olympic reissue is 632xxxx. Production was limited to just two batches, one of 50 units and another of 200 units, for a total of only 250 cameras. This particular camera is from the 200-unit batch.
The lens supplied is the W-Nikkor 3.5cm f1.8. Among the early S3 Black Paint examples we have handled, this 35mm lens is by far the most common pairing.
It is said that these early S3 Black Paint cameras were supplied for press use together with Nikkor 35mm lenses. Most were reportedly used hard and eventually discarded, which makes surviving examples extremely rare today. This camera, too, shows very heavy use, with a powerful, almost intimidating presence. The wear suggests it was truly used by a professional photographer.
The brass revealed through the worn black paint tells the story of a battle-hardened camera, one that has clearly lived a demanding working life.
This item was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us. Its condition remains unchanged from the time of the last sale and is excellent for practical use.
The well-worn, honest appearance of the Nikkor matches the black Nikon S3 body perfectly, evoking the image of a professional tool once used by members of the press. There are countless dings and marks, but they all come together beautifully, giving the set a strong sense of character and presence.
Both the body and lens were overhauled in 2019 by Kiitos, and all functions remain in fine working order today. The viewfinder is clear and bright. To ensure everything was in top condition for this resale, a full inspection and rangefinder adjustment were carried out by a specialist in January 2026.
The lens shows a few very light cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements, but these have virtually no effect on actual shooting. Aside from this, there are no noticeable scratches or haze, and the glass is clear and transparent. The coating remains fully intact. Considering how extensively this set has been used, the fact that the glass has been kept in such good condition speaks volumes about the care taken by the original owner and their approach to equipment as true professional tools.
