Angénieux 35mm f2.5 Type R1. This example is an early Type R1 with the finely knurled rings. Manufactured in 1952. Genuine Leica screw mount with rangefinder coupling. Retrofocus design with 6 elements in 5 groups. Distance scale in feet. Minimum focusing distance is 3.5 feet (approx. 1m). The filter diameter is 51mm or 51.5mm, but the tolerance is quite strict, so matching the filter to the actual lens is recommended.
This early Type R1 Angénieux was produced 73 years ago. When new, the lens originally had a deep black appearance, but with use the dark blue anodized finish at the front gradually fades, developing a distinctive bluish tone through aging. A truly jewel-like lens that is attractive both in rendering and in appearance. Some even earlier Type R1 examples can also be found with finishes that have aged toward gunmetal or slightly greenish tones. A rare item.

Small scratches and minor paint loss can be seen on the front edge of the lens. Overall it shows a nicely used character, with the glossy black finish still remaining, giving it a very pleasing appearance.
Fully overhauled in 2025. The aperture and helicoid operate with a smooth, damped feel and just the right amount of torque. Angénieux lenses often use many aluminum parts, and it is not uncommon to find examples with looseness or overly light operation, but this one feels completely different. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
The glass shows some coating wear and a few very minor marks on the front element, but for an Angénieux it is more than sufficiently clean.
