The ultra-fast large-aperture lens proudly presented by Leica, the Noctilux-M 50mm f1.0.
Following the original Noctilux f1.2 and the f1 E58, this is the third-generation Noctilux, E60 version. Among them, this example corresponds to the later variation of the early detachable-hood type. It is admittedly a rather complicated classification, but referring to it as the late detachable-hood E60 version would certainly be understood among enthusiasts.
The serial number is in the 3.4 million range, manufactured in 1986. Made by Leitz Canada. The correct hood is 12544. Unlike the previous E58 and early E60 versions, which use the 12539 hood, this model is secured by twin side claws, similar to the IROOA type.
Its 6-element, 7-group spherical design without aspherical elements produces what can only be described as the true Noctilux world. At or near full aperture f1.0, it renders highlights with a delicate, veiled flare and creates a deep, immersive bokeh that seems to draw the viewer in. This uniquely atmospheric rendering is something only this lens can deliver.
Only the faintest paint loss can be seen on the knurled section of the barrel; otherwise, it remains in superb condition, retaining plenty of the atmosphere of when it was new.
Fully overhauled in February 2026, including focus calibration. The aperture and helicoid operate with exceptional smoothness. Among the hood-separate E60 Noctilux lenses, rangefinder coupling can sometimes be unreliable, but thanks to meticulous servicing, this example couples perfectly. You can enjoy shooting wide open with complete confidence and a wonderfully satisfying feel.
There is very slight deterioration to the coating surfaces, but it has virtually no impact on actual photography. The glass is beautifully clear and crisp.
A lens that fully delivers the distinctive Noctilux rendering. The results from our practical shooting test were excellent, and sample images are available in our test gallery. Even at full aperture f1 and in backlit conditions, it produced images with solid contrast. The beautifully gentle flare, rich bokeh, and striking three-dimensional separation that highlights the subject are truly impressive.
