Summilux-M 35mm f1.4. Originally introduced in 1961, the first-generation Summilux 35mm—commonly known as the Steel Rim—has remained highly popular and continues to rise in value. This is its reissue version, released in 2022.
Serial number is in the 4.83 million range. Leica product code is 11301.
In addition to the optical design, the dedicated OLLUX hood from the original era has also been faithfully reproduced. The filter size has been changed from E41 to E46.
Compared to the original first-generation Summilux 35mm, this version shows less peripheral swirl wide open and delivers a more well-balanced rendering, while retaining the very soft and gentle atmosphere near maximum aperture. A lens with excellent image quality.
The exterior shows almost no signs of use and is in very clean condition.
Both the aperture ring and the helicoid operate smoothly, with a very pleasant handling feel. Rangefinder coupling is spot on near wide open, delivering a truly atmospheric and appealing rendering. When stopped down to around f4, focus shift causes a tendency toward back focus at close distances. For close-up shooting at smaller apertures, using live view is recommended. From medium distances to infinity, rangefinder coupling remains accurate. The glass is clear and free from haze or cleaning marks, with a beautifully transparent appearance.
As original steel rim versions have become increasingly difficult to obtain and expensive, this classically styled reissue represents an excellent alternative.
Included are the E46 screw-in hood 12486, the OLLUX reissue hood 12487, front and rear caps, and the original box.
