Summaron 28mm f2.8 with goggles for Leica M3. Leitz product code SIMWO / 11106Q. Serial number in the 1.69 million range, manufactured in 1959. Meter and feet scales. Filter size E39.
With the adoption of a new type of glass, it became half a stop faster at f2.8 compared to the earlier Summaron. Double Gauss design with 6 elements in 4 groups. Of course, it can be used on Leica cameras other than the M3 as well.
The goggles add some weight, but the ability to focus down to 0.65 m is a real advantage. A clean goggled example does not compromise the finder view.
Mounted with an ITDOO or IROOA hood and paired with a Leica M3, it represents the very essence of German industrial functional beauty. Image quality is excellent, with high resolution in the center and gentle fall-off toward the edges, producing a distinctive and atmospheric rendering.
There are some light scuffs on the upper chrome area of the square goggles, but overall the appearance is quite clean. No dents or dings are present.
A full overhaul including the goggles was carried out in January 2026, along with rangefinder calibration. The aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly. Thanks to careful cleaning, the goggles are clear and bright, and rangefinder coupling is spot on.
The lens glass shows extremely minor coating wear that becomes visible only under strong LED light, and should have virtually no effect on actual images.
A genuine UVa filter, front and rear caps, and the original box are included, though the box is quite worn.
Goggled Summarons are well known for being difficult to service, and fully overhauled examples in good condition are surprisingly hard to find. A very practical lens, ready for real use.
