An unnumbered Elmar 5cm f3.5, with no serial number. Distance scale in meters, half-turn helicoid, helicoid number 3. Commonly known as the Short Elmar. Uncoated.
Although this is not what is generally referred to as the old Elmar, it is believed to be a new Elmar originally fitted to a Leica Model A produced around 1930, later factory-converted by Leitz during the prewar period, from the mid-1930s to around 1940, to Leica screw mount with rangefinder coupling.
The chrome Short Elmar is a rather uncommon piece. Recommended for those who want something a little different from the usual.
There are some light scuffs on the collapsible barrel and other areas, but its beautiful exterior makes it hard to believe that nearly 100 years have passed since its manufacture and subsequent conversion.
Fully overhauled in May 2026. Both the aperture ring and helicoid have been finished with an excellent operating feel. Focus is accurate, and the rangefinder coupling is spot-on.
The matte lacquer inside the barrel for preventing internal reflections has also been carefully reapplied, so you can expect an even tighter image rendering.
The glass shows very slight yellowing, but there are no noticeable cleaning marks, fungus marks, or other significant flaws, and it is beautifully clear and bright. The results of our test shoot were also excellent. It produced richly atmospheric images with the distinctive character unique to an uncoated lens. Please take a look at our sample gallery.
Original front and rear caps are included. The front cap is a beautiful bakelite example.
