Leitz’s celebrated fast standard lens, the Summicron 50mm f2, second generation—commonly known as the 6-element version. This example bears a serial number in the 2.58 million range and was produced in 1973. Made in Germany. Optical construction is 5 groups, 6 elements. From this second version onward, the minimum focusing distance was shortened to 0.7 m. The Leitz product code is 11818.
Often overshadowed by the first-generation Summicron, this second version nevertheless delivers excellent image quality. The infinity lock was eliminated, resulting in improved handling. The use of a lightweight alloy barrel is another welcome feature, with an actual weight of approximately 200 g.
There is slight paint loss on the helicoid ring, the knurled base section, and along the edge of the front rim, but overall there are no noticeable scratches and the barrel remains clean and attractive.
Fully overhauled in January 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring clicks and the helicoid torque feel exceptionally smooth and satisfying. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focusing is accurate.
The glass shows a single, extremely faint cleaning mark on the front element, but there is no haze or fungus, and it is clear and crisp. Actual shooting tests produced excellent results.
Includes a third-party front cap, a plastic case, and the original box with matching serial number.
