A wide-angle lens made by P. Angénieux of France. 35mm f2.5 Type R1, early version, in Exakta mount. The Type R1 was introduced in 1950, and this particular example was manufactured in 1953. Distance scale in meters. Minimum focusing distance is 0.9m.
It features a retrofocus optical design with 6 elements in 5 groups, delivering the gentle rendering characteristic of Angénieux lenses. Not only suitable for Exakta and Topcon bodies, it is also a lens that can be enjoyed on mirrorless digital cameras via an adapter.
Although many early Type R1 lenses are heavily used, this example is unusually clean, retaining much of its deep black paint. The three matte silver aluminum bands provide a refined accent, and together with the elegant fonts and engravings, give the lens a truly stylish appearance. Mounted on a favorite camera, it will surely make a striking impression.
A beautiful example with the black paint well preserved. The aluminum bands also show only minimal signs of use and remain in very good condition. Unusually clean for an early Type R1, and well suited for a collection.
All functions operate properly. The front element shows some coating deterioration typical of Angénieux lenses, but the results of our test shooting were excellent. Even when the lens is pointed toward a light source, it still produces solid images. In our experience, Angénieux wide-angle lenses often deliver very good results even when they have minor cleaning marks or coating wear.
Sample photos have been posted in our test gallery. All images were taken near wide open. The lens leaves a strong impression with its solid rendering at the center, elegant flare in the highlights, and pleasantly soft rendering toward the edges.
A genuine front cap is included.
