A wide-angle lens by Nippon Kogaku, the late version of the W-Nikkor 25mm f4 for the Nikon S series. Introduced following the Contax Topogon 25mm f4, it boasted the widest angle of view in the world for a 35mm format camera at the time of its release in 1953.

The optical design is, of course, Topogon-type, consisting of 4 elements in 4 groups with symmetrically arranged meniscus lenses. It exhibits virtually no distortion and delivers a clear image with a pleasant softness wide open. Compared to the Topogon, it offers notably sharper rendering.

This Nikkor 25mm f4 is also unique among Nikon S-mount interchangeable lenses in that focusing is performed solely via the camera body’s helicoid.

This later black paint version is significantly lighter than the earlier model, which is another appealing point. The lens itself weighs just 73g, roughly half the weight of the early version.

Mounted on Nikon S models—especially black paint bodies—along with a finder and hood, it creates an outstanding appearance, simply a joy to admire.

Incidentally, it is said that only around 300 units of the Nikkor 25mm for Nikon S mount were produced in total, including both early chrome and later black versions. A truly rare piece.

There is a small dent on the outer edge of the front rim. Overall, signs of use such as light scuffs can be seen, but it remains in a condition well suited for practical use.
The included dedicated finder shows touch-up paint, a dent on the edge of the eyepiece side, and numerous cleaning marks on the front glass, though this does not affect the view when looking through it.
Fully overhauled in March 2026. All functions operate smoothly.
The lens shows a somewhat higher number of light cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements, but these have little to no impact on actual shooting.
Comes with the dedicated finder and original front and rear caps.
Overall, it shows considerable signs of use, but it is a well-balanced, practical piece—ideal for carrying and shooting without hesitation.
