W-Nikkor.C 35mm f1.8 for Nikon S mount, external bayonet. Released in September 1956. Optical construction of 5 groups, 7 elements. Distance scale in feet. Filter size is 43mm.
This legendary lens employs newly developed glass types of the period and earned high acclaim for its outstanding performance. At the time of its release, it was the fastest wide-angle lens in the world. In the years that followed, lenses such as the Canon 35mm f1.5 and the Summilux 35mm f1.4 appeared, marking the beginning of the fast-aperture era for wide-angle lenses. The optical design was by Hideo Azuma, who was responsible for many Nikon S-mount and Leica L-mount lenses.
With its finely detailed rendering and gentle, unobtrusive bokeh, this lens delivers images with a moist, atmospheric character. Its unique rendering has captivated many photographers, and it is one of the old lenses highly regarded by our staff, who continue to test and shoot with it day after day.
Please note that this lens uses radioactive glass, and slight yellowing of the glass can be observed. Measurements taken with a simple radiation meter show values clearly exceeding the level of natural background radiation in open space.
No signs of use are visible, and the lens shows a very clean exterior, still retaining much of its original, near-new appearance. Both the black paint and chrome finish remain beautifully preserved. A fine example well suited for a collection.
All functions operate normally. Rangefinder coupling has been checked and confirmed using a Nikon S body and a focusing glass.
There are about three very faint, hairline cleaning marks on the front element, but they should have virtually no effect on actual photographs. The glass is clear and bright with no haze, and the lens is expected to deliver its original optical performance.
Original front and rear caps are included.
