Leica M3 early model. Serial number 7008xx. A desirable 700xxx serial range example. Manufactured in 1954, the first year of M3 production. According to the Leitz shipping records, this camera was delivered in January 1954. Double stroke, without frame selector. The tripod socket on the base plate is the large type.
Although this example is not a so-called step body, step and non-step bodies were intermixed from the very first single-digit M3 serial numbers. This camera retains many early features throughout and remains in fully original condition. The number engraved on the inside of the base plate matches the top cover.
Notably, there is no screw at the 12 o’clock position of the mount. It has an ASA 200 back door, a slightly pink-tinted frame counter indicator, early-style markings on the inside of the back door, a half-moon satin-chrome accessory shoe stopper, and a rewind shaft with a slotted center. An abundance of early details can be found throughout.
The stepped area beside the rangefinder window does not show the slanted cut seen on some step bodies, but slanted and non-slanted examples are known to coexist within this serial range, and this is unquestionably original. The film guide rails on the chassis are the double-rail type; within this serial range, single-rail examples are also seen intermixed, and this too is entirely original.
Like the earliest Leica A models, the early M3 becomes more fascinating the deeper one explores. The more you learn, the more intriguing it becomes — a truly profound and rewarding Leica.
A few very light scuff marks can be seen on the top cover. The bottom plate shows somewhat more fine surface wear. There are no dents or noticeable dings.
Including the exterior parts, this is an early M3 that retains its original condition, and the interior has also been checked by a professional repair specialist. The vulcanite covering is entirely original and remains in beautiful condition.
Overhauled in February 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the film advance, shutter, and all other controls operate very smoothly. There is slight separation of the balsam at the lower area of the rangefinder patch, but the finder view is crisp and clear, with good contrast in the double image.
In recent years, three-digit serial number M3 bodies have become increasingly difficult to find. An early, original M3 worthy of any collection.
A genuine body cap with GERMANY decal is included.
