The legendary Summilux 35mm f1.4, 1st version, commonly known as the Steel Rim. This example has a serial number in the 1.77 million range and was manufactured in 1960.
In recent years, Leica reissued the Steel Rim to great acclaim, but this is the original. Manufactured by Leitz Canada, with the Leitz product code OCLUX / 11870.
A 5 elements in 7 groups design. Wide open, it delivers a beautifully dreamy rendering with a gentle veil-like glow. Stopped down, it transforms into a crisply sharp performer. The transparency and three-dimensional rendering at slightly stopped-down apertures are truly outstanding.
Every generation of the Summilux has its own charm, but this first version stands apart in both style and craftsmanship. With the dedicated OLLUX hood attached, it is arguably one of the most stylish lenses ever made by Leitz. The white Steel Rim pairs beautifully not only with white bodies, but also with black paint and black chrome bodies.

Shows almost no signs of use and retains a very clean appearance. The satin chrome finish maintains its beautiful texture, with no noticeable scratches or dents.
Fully overhauled in March 2026. Through careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid offer an exquisite, smooth feel, allowing for a stress-free shooting experience. Rangefinder coupling is accurate and reliable.
The front element shows very faint traces of fungus and slight coating wear, and there are two small balsam separations in the front group, but these have virtually no impact on actual shooting. Otherwise, the glass is clear, free from haze or noticeable cleaning marks.

At or near wide open, it delivers a soft, airy rendering while still retaining fine detail. Stopping down by one or two stops reduces flare, yet preserves its characteristic rich and gentle rendering, creating a beautiful atmosphere. Around f5.6, it transforms into a crisp, punchy, and richly textured image. A truly enjoyable lens that offers a wide range of expressive possibilities.
