Nikkor-P.C 8.5cm f2 in Leica screw mount. This example is the early chrome version with serial number 399xxx. Distance scale is in feet. The optical design is 3 groups and 5 elements, with a straight-moving helicoid. The lens itself weighs 423 grams.
It is regarded as a copy of the Sonnar 85mm f2 for Contax rangefinders, but it became a landmark lens after Life magazine correspondent D. D. Duncan used it during the Korean War and praised its performance, bringing worldwide recognition to the excellence of Japanese-made optics.
This item was previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by its owner and has once again made its way back to us. Welcome home. This is now the fourth time we have handled this lens.
There is a single extremely minor rub mark on the knurled section of the helicoid and another on the upper knurling at the base, but aside from that there are no notable blemishes and the exterior condition is very clean.
It received an overhaul in 2023. The feel of the aperture and helicoid remains smooth and pleasant.
The glass shows only the slightest hint of coating deterioration, with no noticeable cleaning marks or haze, giving it a clean, clear optical condition. You can expect the classic rendering of the 8.5cm Nikkor.
Rangefinder coupling and focusing accuracy are excellent. It delivers a sharp, powerful image even wide open. Superb performance, just as in the previous sale.
The original hood, fitted with a Walz Series 7 SL filter inserted between the parts, shows one somewhat noticeable rub mark. The set also includes the original cap, finder, case, and even the matching-number box. The beauty of the blue velvet-lined box is noteworthy. The finder is the type with the L mark engraved on the bottom of the shoe. A complete set in this condition is exceedingly rare.
Highly recommended for collectors.
