Noctilux 50mm f1.0. The highly sought-after E58 version. Leitz product code 11821. This example bears a serial number in the 2.85 million range and was manufactured in 1977. The glass was developed in Germany, while the optical design and production were handled by Leitz Canada.
A modified Gaussian design with 6 groups and 7 elements. Newly developed glass types and an air lens were employed to achieve the remarkable maximum aperture of f1.0. One of Leitz’s proud masterpieces, capable of producing outstanding images even in extremely low-light conditions.
Compared to its predecessor, the Noctilux f1.2 with an aspherical element, this lens is characterized by a more delicate, softer rendering wide open. The extremely shallow depth of field at f1.0 is astonishing; vignetting can be observed near wide open, but the creative enjoyment of using it to advantage is truly unique. In recent years its popularity has surged, driving prices higher, yet considering its performance, that reputation is well deserved.
The rangefinder coupling has been carefully adjusted, delivering precise, decisive focus that makes this lens a real pleasure to use.
There is extremely minor black paint loss on the edges and very slight fading on the helicoid ring, but overall the lens shows little sign of use and still retains a beautiful appearance.
A full overhaul including focus adjustment was carried out in December 2025. Thanks to the careful servicing, all moving parts such as the aperture and helicoid ring operate smoothly with a pleasant feel. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, allowing precise focusing through the rangefinder even wide open.
There is very slight coating deterioration on the middle element, but it has virtually no effect on actual images. No cleaning marks are present, and the glass is clean and clear.
Actual shooting results were also excellent. Sample images are posted in our test gallery, and we would be happy if you take a look. Many of the samples were taken near wide open, while the photos of the shrine and shopfront were stopped down to around f2.8.
The lens comes with the dedicated E58 hood 12519, the rare genuine front cap 14205 (not cracked!), a rear cap, and the original box. As is often the case, the box insert is missing.
