Leitz vertical rangefinder, FODIS. This is the early version with a small-diameter distance dial. Distance scale is in feet, with a minimum measuring distance of 3 feet (approx. 1 meter). It bears a five-digit serial number and dates from the 1920s.
The black-painted body paired with nickel-plated dials is beautifully finished, and the hexagonal E. Leitz logo inlaid in silver adds an air of refinement. It is a superb example of pre-war Leitz craftsmanship, combining precision engineering with a strong sense of luxury. With a base length of 83 mm, it allows for highly accurate distance measurement.
Its overall length of 105 mm gives it a tall, tower-like profile when mounted on a camera body, a striking design rarely seen in modern accessories.
This is an item previously sold by our shop. It has been carefully used by the customer and has returned to us in the same beautiful condition as when it was last sold.
There are only extremely slight signs of wear, while the matte black paint remains well preserved. The nickel-plated dials show no noticeable scratches or plating loss, retaining the subdued yet elegant luster characteristic of nickel. It is remarkably beautiful, hardly believable as an industrial product that has survived for a full century.
The glass is also clean, with a clear and crisp double image, offering excellent visibility and a very satisfying user experience.
The leather of the original case is in outstanding condition as well, astonishing for a leather product nearly 100 years old. Paired with a well-kept Leica Model A, it would make an exceptional combination. A superb piece, equally suited for collection.
