Serial number: 2,260,000 range, manufactured in 1968.
This model, which can only be found in this serial number range, features a 5-element, 6-group new design lens housed in the first-generation barrel, making it a transitional model. It has been referred to as a Transitional Model in recent years, particularly overseas. Leitz product code: 11817, the same as the later 2nd generation 6-element version. Filter size: E39.
From the Leica A-type to the M3, early Summicron and Summilux 35mm & 50mm, Noctilux f/1.2, and more recently the Apo-Summicron 50mm, Leica's early lenses have always embodied remarkable craftsmanship, design, and performance, consistently impressing enthusiasts. This early 6-element Summicron is no exception, reflecting Leitz's commitment to excellence.
It retains the refined aesthetic of the later first-generation models, and its design works beautifully with both black chrome and black paint finishes.
Moreover, this transitional model has long been praised for its exceptional rendering, and this particular lens lives up to that reputation. It delivers beautiful, sharp images and is truly an outstanding performer. A rare find.
This is an item previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by the customer and has now returned to us due to an upgrade. Its condition is unchanged from the last sale. There is slight paint wear on the edge of the filter ring and around the helicoid ring, but the barrel retains a deep black finish and a clean overall appearance.
It received a full overhaul in 2025. Thanks to meticulous servicing, all mechanical operations remain very smooth, allowing you to focus comfortably on shooting. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, delivering exceptionally sharp results. There is one small spot of residue near the perimeter of the front element that could not be removed during cleaning, and a tiny patch of haze on the edge of an inner element, but neither affects real-world photography. Test shots in our sample gallery were excellent, showcasing the crisp and striking rendering characteristic of this early type.
