Summicron 50mm f2, the very first version of the second generation. Serial number in the 2.26 million range, manufactured in 1968. This is a transitional model, found only in this serial block, where the newly designed 5 group 6 element lens was fitted into the first generation barrel. In recent years it has been referred to overseas as the Transitional Model. Leitz product code is 11817, the same as the standard 2nd generation 6 element that followed soon after. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7 m.
From the Leica Model A, to the M3, the early Summicron and Summilux 35 and 50mm, the Noctilux f1.2, and in more recent years the APO Summicron 50mm, Leica’s first versions have always been made with tremendous effort, impressing people with their quality, design, and performance. This very first 6 element version also clearly reflects the strong spirit of Leitz.
It inherits the refined exterior design of the late first generation, a superb look that pairs beautifully with both black chrome and black paint bodies. This transitional model has long been said to deliver outstanding image quality, and this piece is no exception. A lens that truly performs.
A rare item.
This lens was previously sold by our shop and has now returned after being carefully used by the customer. Its condition remains the same as at the time of the previous sale. Light wear from use can be seen on the helicoid and the front edge of the filter ring, but there are no dents or impact marks. It is in a condition well suited for worry-free everyday use.
It received a full overhaul in 2025, including focusing adjustment. The operation of all moving parts, such as the aperture and helicoid rings, is very smooth, and rangefinder coupling is accurate.
The glass shows very slight coating deterioration, but no noticeable marks or haze. It is clear and bright with excellent transparency.
The earliest examples of the 2nd version Summicron always impress with their sharp rendering, and this one performs beautifully as well. Although it is from the previous sale, sample images have been uploaded to our Test Gallery.
It comes with a genuine black-rim UVa filter, an aftermarket front cap, and a genuine rear cap.
