The first-generation Elmarit 28mm f2.8, early version, commonly known as the 9-element. A highly sought-after red scale variant. This example was made in Canada. Leitz product code 11801. Serial number in the 2,060,000 range, manufactured in 1964. A non-retrofocus design with 6 groups and 9 elements. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m.
With its distinctive waisted profile, striking red engravings, beautifully integrated black infinity lock, rich tonal rendering, and gentle bokeh, it remains one of the most popular versions among all Elmarit 28mm generations.
When in good optical condition, the 1st Elmarit delivers sharp performance wide open along with a smooth, pleasing out-of-focus rendition. Many 9-element examples are known to suffer from separation that can resemble haze across the inner elements, often resulting in softer rendering. This particular lens shows no such separation and offers excellent image quality.
Filter size is E48, or it can be used with the 12501 hood together with Series VII filters. Please note that it cannot be mounted on the Leica M5 or CL.
A lens that combines superb image quality with timeless, refined styling. It pairs beautifully with classic black paint and black chrome bodies from the film era through to current digital M models.
There is some minor paint loss on the black-painted stopper section and along the edges, but no dents or deep scratches are present, and the overall appearance remains very good. It gives the impression of having been carefully used.
Fully overhauled in February 2026. With meticulous servicing, the aperture operation, helicoid movement, and the feel of the infinity stopper have become exceptionally smooth. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
There is very slight coating wear on the front and rear elements, and about two extremely faint cleaning marks on an inner element, but these have virtually no effect on actual photography. There is no haze, and the glass is clear and crisp.
The lens performed very well in practical shooting tests. Sample images are available in our photo gallery, all taken near wide open. It delivers the classic first-generation Elmarit character — high resolution and crispness, yet with a touch of atmosphere in its rendering.
