Angénieux 90mm f2.5 Type Y12. Original Leica screw mount. Late Y12 version distinguished by the beautiful accent of three knurled rings.
There is also the Type Y1 in the Angénieux 90mm f2.5 lineup. Although both share a 4-group, 4-element construction, the optical design differs from that of the Y12. The coating shows amber and purple tones.
Serial number 471xxx, manufactured in 1957. Distance scale in meters. Minimum focusing distance is 1.4 m. Filter size is the uncommon 43.5 mm.
Very slight rubbing and tiny marks can be seen, but there are no noticeable scratches or dents, and the lens presents a very clean appearance. Signs of use are minimal, and the black paint—often prone to thinning on Angénieux lenses—remains nicely preserved. The satin chrome knurling also retains a beautiful shine, giving this Angénieux 90mm f2.5 a particularly clean and attractive exterior.
Many examples of the Angénieux 90mm f2.5 suffer from play in the barrel that cannot be corrected, but this lens shows no looseness. The aperture and helicoid operate smoothly with a pleasant feel. Rangefinder coupling is slightly front-focused around the 5–10 m range, but this improves when stopped down one stop. At other distances, including infinity, focus is accurate.
When examined under strong LED light, the glass shows only very slight coating wear. There is no haze or fungus. For an Angénieux lens, the glass is in notably clean condition.
The Type Y12 delivers a characteristically crisp sharpness even at full aperture, combined with a rich and pleasing bokeh.
Test shots also produced very good results. We would be delighted if you take a look at the sample images in our test gallery. All images were taken wide open.
