Angénieux 28mm f3.5 Type R11, Leica screw mount. This is the later R11 version, distinguished by the thicker knurling on the aperture and helicoid rings.
Manufactured in France by P. Angénieux in 1957. Rangefinder coupled. Retrofocus design with a 6 elements in 6 groups optical construction. The lens features a beautiful purple-tone coating. The distance scale on the helicoid is marked in meters, a welcome detail for snap shooters.
Typical of retrofocus designs, the front of the lens is large with a distinctive tapered profile. The unique styling is instantly recognizable as Angénieux, with its refined two-tone finish combining blue anodized aluminum and matte chrome knurling. A truly elegant example of French design.
The L-mount Angénieux 28mm was produced in relatively small numbers and is quite a rare lens today. Its distinctive styling suits not only Barnack Leicas but also black paint bodies and digital Leica M cameras beautifully.
Incidentally, the filter size of the Type R11 differs between versions: the early type uses 56mm, while the later type uses 58mm (sometimes noted as 58.5mm), a detail that often confuses Angénieux users. This example includes a Miyazaki hood and a protective filter, so it can be enjoyed immediately with confidence.
Rare item.
The front edge of the barrel shows some fading from long years of use. There are also light scratches and minor signs of wear, but for an L-mount Angénieux it remains in quite good cosmetic condition. There are no dents or impact marks.
The aperture and helicoid operate smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is spot on.
A few faint cleaning marks can be seen on the front element, but they should have no effect on actual photography. Test results were excellent.

A genuine front cap, a third-party rear cap, and a Miyazaki Optical lens hood with a built-in protective filter are included.
