Summicron 50mm f2, first generation.
This example is the early rigid version. Serial number in the 1.54 million range, manufactured in 1957. Leitz product code SOSIC-MS, later 11818. Distance scale in feet. Minimum focusing distance is 1 meter.
Modified Gauss design with 6 groups and 7 elements. Designed with an emphasis on contrast, with improved resolution, and widely regarded as one of Leica’s classic masterpieces.
The Summicron remains one of Leica’s representative lenses and is still in production today, but the first generation, with its high-quality chrome finish and beautifully balanced form, continues to enjoy enduring popularity. A true Leica standard lens that is as pleasing to admire as it is to use. It looks superb on any M body.
Filter size is E39. Compatible lens hoods are ITDOO and IROOA.
There is slight paint loss on the silver paint of the focusing helicoid, but for an early first-generation rigid (non-collapsible) version, the overall appearance is exceptionally clean.
A full overhaul was completed in January 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and the helicoid operate smoothly. The internal anti-reflection lacquer of the barrel has also been meticulously reapplied, contributing to tighter, more refined image rendering. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focus accuracy is excellent.
There is light balsam separation along the edge of a middle element, as well as a few very faint cleaning marks, but these should have virtually no effect on actual photographs. Test shots confirmed very good performance.
Period-correct genuine front and rear caps are included.
