Summar 50mm f2 with chrome barrel. Serial number in the 420,000 range, produced in 1938. Leitz product code SUMUS.
Pre-war, uncoated optics. Six-blade aperture. Continental aperture scale (f2, 2.2, 3.2, etc.). Distance scale in meters. Takes A36 filters. The correct original hood is SOOMP.
A classic Leica standard lens, offering the rich bokeh and natural vignetting characteristic of the double Gauss design. Wide open, it delivers a soft, atmospheric rendering; stopped down, it becomes sharper while retaining a gentle, pleasing character.
The Summar evolved through several versions: the early bulbous type, the black-rim version, and finally this most widely produced model, each available in nickel or chrome finishes. In the late production period, the so-called Tropen Summar was also introduced.
This example is the most common all-chrome collapsible type, but finding one with good glass condition is becoming increasingly difficult.
Due to many years of use, there are some scuff marks on the collapsible section, with a bit of the brass showing through. The edges around the base of the barrel also show slightly thinned plating, revealing a hint of brass. Overall, it has a well-worn, dignified appearance.
Fully overhauled in January 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid operate extremely smoothly, offering a stress-free and very comfortable handling feel. Rangefinder coupling and focus are both spot on.
The front element shows minor age-related glass yellowing, but there are hardly any cleaning marks. Considering how easily Summar glass tends to mark, this is a notably clean example. There is no haze or fungus, and actual shooting tests produced excellent results. A Summar with good glass condition can deliver surprisingly impressive rendering.
The lens comes with the original front cap and an aftermarket rear cap.
