A famed lens, the Summilux 35mm f1.4 1st version, commonly known as the Steel Rim. Serial number is in the 1.73 million range, made in 1960. This example belongs to the very earliest production batch and is among the first thirty Steel Rim lenses made. Highly appealing for those who appreciate early originals.
Manufactured by Leitz Canada. Leitz product code is OCLUX / 11870.
Optical construction is 7 elements in 5 groups. Wide open, it produces a beautifully ethereal glow, as if wrapped in a soft veil, while stopping down yields crisp, cutting sharpness. With the aperture slightly closed, the transparency and three dimensionality of the rendering are truly exceptional.
Every generation of Summilux has its charms, but this 1st version stands apart in both design and craftsmanship. Fitted with its dedicated OLLUX hood, it becomes one of the most strikingly handsome lenses Leitz ever made. It looks superb not only on chrome bodies but also on black paint bodies.
A rare piece.
There is some plating wear on the focusing tab, but overall this Steel Rim shows little use and remains in clean condition. The chrome finish across the barrel retains its beautiful matte texture.
Fully overhauled in December 2025. The aperture and helicoid operate with an exquisite feel that makes shooting a pleasure. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.
The front element shows a few faint superficial marks, and the rear element has five or six very light hairlines. The internal elements show minor coating deterioration that could not be fully removed during servicing, but it is only visible under strong LED light. None of these points should have any noticeable impact on actual photography.
Sample images are posted in our Test Gallery. The gentle glow that appears in highlight areas, such as sunlight filtering through a row of ginkgo trees, creates a beautifully atmospheric rendering. All samples were taken near maximum aperture.
Includes our custom FB-05 front cap made specifically for the Steel Rim, a genuine E41 UVa filter, and a rear cap.
