Tele-Elmarit 90mm f2.8, early version. Chrome finish. Leitz catalog No. 11800. A 5-element, 5-group lens designed by Leitz Canada.
The serial number of this lens is 20017xx, dating it to 1963. Production of the Tele-Elmarit began with serial number 2001001, and this example belongs to the very first production batch.
A compact medium telephoto lens with a form factor reminiscent of early Summilux 50mm f1.4 lenses, almost like a standard lens in size. Wide open, it delivers a pleasantly soft rendering; stopping down dramatically increases contrast, resulting in a rich, dense image.
The beautifully finished satin chrome barrel, characteristic of Leitz at its postwar peak, is so refined that it is a pleasure simply to admire.
The filter thread is E39 screw-in. Compatible hoods are IUFOO or 12575.
There are two pin-point sized, extremely minor marks on the helicoid ring, but aside from these, there is virtually no sign of use. It is an exceptionally beautiful example that conveys the atmosphere of its factory-new condition from 1963 to the present day. The beauty of the satin chrome finish is truly outstanding.
A full overhaul was carried out in December 2025. Due to its near-new condition, the lens had not been serviced for many years, and heavy stiffness in the mechanisms made complete disassembly extremely challenging. However, it was ultimately fully dismantled and meticulously serviced, resulting in a superb finish. The aperture and helicoid operate with the expected exceptionally smooth feel, and rangefinder coupling is spot on. Accurate focusing snaps into place even wide open.
The middle element shows extremely minor coating deterioration, but this has virtually no effect on actual images. Aside from this, there is no haze or cleaning marks, and the glass is beautifully clear.
The original front cap, plastic case, and original box are included.
A truly hard-to-find condition. Ideal for a collection.
