※About rarity

A rare nickel-finish Hektor 2.8cm f6.3. Serial number in the 270,000 range, manufactured in 1935. An example from the very first year of Hektor production, corresponding to the second batch. Rangefinder coupled. Distance scale in feet. Continental-style aperture. Uncoated glass.

Among the many lenses produced by Leitz, this is one of the most compact ever made.

This nickel version is classically paired with black & nickel Leica DII, DIII, or Standard bodies, yet it also creates a remarkably appealing look when mounted on a black paint M body. So compact that you may almost forget a lens is attached, it offers outstanding portability and lightness when carried. That said, its very compactness calls for care during mounting and removal to avoid accidental drops. It is advisable to attach and detach the lens over a desk or at a low height.

Despite its modest maximum aperture of f6.3, this lens produces images with a truly distinctive atmosphere. Many photographers find themselves captivated once they begin using it. The helicoid operation can be handled roughly without issue, making quick snapshots entirely possible. An irresistible lens for lovers of street photography.

The nickel-plated parts show numerous signs of wear and small scratches overall. There are no areas where the brass base metal is exposed. A very minor dent can be seen at the base of the barrel, but it does not affect mounting to a camera body or L/M adapter. Considering that nearly 90 years have passed since its manufacture, it remains in reasonably good condition.

Fully overhauled in January 2026. The aperture and helicoid offer a pleasant, well-balanced torque, and rangefinder coupling is spot on.

The Hektor 28mm is often troubled by characteristic haze, but this example shows no noticeable haze or fungus, with beautifully clear and transparent glass. The results of our practical shooting tests were also excellent.

Sample images have been posted in our Test Shot Gallery. All were taken wide open and without a hood. When the glass is in good condition, this lens delivers solid contrast and pleasing color rendition, making it more enjoyable the more you shoot with it. It is also fun to compare it with other Leitz 28mm lenses.

Supplied with a genuine Leitz bakelite front cap and a metal rear cap.
