Leica M3 + Summicron 50mm f2

※About rarity

A matched boxed set consisting of an early Leica M3 and a collapsible Summicron, complete with all original documents.
On the bottom of the box, the Leitz product code ISUMO-M3 is stamped, indicating the factory kit in which the M3 and Summicron were sold together. For reference, the body-only code is IGEMO, while the M3 supplied with a Summicron is identified as ISUMO.
This example bears a body serial number in the 730,000 range and features the double-stroke advance. According to Leitz serial number lists, the body dates to 1955 and the lens to 1954; however, the serial numbers printed on the box confirm that both were shipped at the same time, making this their original pairing from new.
The Summicron is engraved with meter distance markings, and the set includes a German-language instruction manual issued in late 1954. These details strongly suggest that the camera was sold in Germany in 1955.
The box, tag (certificate), Leica M3 body, and Summicron lens all have matching serial numbers. Complete, unseparated sets preserved to this degree have become extremely rare in recent years.
The M3 body retains many characteristics of the very first M3 models introduced in 1954, including the four slotted screws on the top cover, the slotted screw at the center of the rewind knob, and the slotted screw at the 12 o’clock position of the lens mount, all contributing to its distinctly early-production character.

Several very faint linear scuffs can be seen on both the top cover and the base plate, along with signs that metal rings were once attached to the strap lugs. There is also a very slight dent around the tripod socket on the base plate, but it is hardly noticeable. Aside from these points, no other marks are visible, and both the body and the lens retain a very clean and attractive appearance.
Both the body and the lens were fully overhauled in January 2026. Film advance, shutter operation, and all other functions work smoothly, and the viewfinder is bright and crystal clear. The vulcanite covering is entirely original, with its textured grain still nicely pronounced, giving the camera a fresh and well-kept impression.
The front element of the lens shows fairly noticeable coating deterioration due to age. In addition, there is very slight haze-like coating degradation on an internal element that could not be completely removed during cleaning. The coating remains intact overall. Focus and rangefinder coupling are accurate and reliable.
The matching-number original boxes for both the body and the lens show appropriate wear from age. Included are a period leather case for the early Leica M3, a German-language manual, the original delivery tag, and a lens cap.
An excellent piece for a collection.
